Maratha

  • When the British encountered the Marathas in 1775, there was a fierce struggle for the throne among the Marathas (the supporters of Peshwa Madhav Rao II were on one side led by Nana Fadnavis and the supporters of Raghunath Rao were on the other side).
  • The British authorities of Bombay favoured Raghunath Rao.
  • Due to this, they got involved in a long battle with the Marathas in the First Anglo-Maratha War (1775 to 1782 AD).
  • All the Marathas Sardars were united and favoured Peshwa and his Prime Minister Nana Fadnavis.
  • The rulers of South India were irritated by the presence of the British among themselves for a long time and taking advantage of this time, Hyder Ali and Nizam waged war against the Company.
  • In this way, the British now had to face powerful alliances of Marathas, Mysore and Hyderabad Apart from this, in 1776 AD, the American people revolted and in this battle the British were being defeated.
